Strengthening trust in digital identity: a European gathering in Berlin

3 min

Last month, all European mobile operators gathered in Berlin for two days of intensive exchanges. On the agenda: substantive discussions, renewed connections, and inspiring talks from guest speakers. The shared objective of this multi stakeholder event was to move forward together to strengthen trust in digital identity across the continent.

Why trust in digital identity is essential

Across Europe, the widespread adoption of digital services makes trust indispensable. It underpins:

  • The security of users and businesses facing fraud risks
  • The fluidity of customer journeys, from payments to public services
  • The interoperability of solutions, enabling a safer and more inclusive ecosystem

Combating financial fraud with mobile trust signals

Participants explored the key role of trust signals provided by mobile networks in combating financial fraud. When responsibly integrated into user journeys, these signals help to:

  • Better authenticate users
  • Detect suspicious activity more quickly
  • Reduce false positives while preserving the user experience

Towards the European Digital Identity Wallet

Discussions also focused on the role of operators within the future European Digital Identity Wallet ecosystem. Operators can contribute to:

  • Robust identity verification
  • Establishing a chain of trust between public and private services
  • Scaling and broad adoption, supported by network capabilities and common standards

Collaboration as an accelerator

A strong takeaway from the workshops is that only close cooperation among operators, solution providers, regulators, and partners will make it possible to build safer digital ecosystems at the European level. Sharing feedback and concrete use cases is a decisive lever for fast, sound progress.

Continuing the conversation within the community

The momentum does not stop in Berlin. Within the GSMA Identity and Data community, members share insights throughout the year on trends, challenges, and real-world use cases to keep driving collective progress.
